In honor of International Women’s Day, the New York Alternative Investment Roundtable is hosting its seventh annual all-female forum.

Susan Webb, Founder, CEO and CIO of Appomattox Advisory will lead a discussion with Kalina Berova, Managing Director, Partnership Portfolio at BCI, Christine Phillpotts, SVP, Portfolio Manager and Senior Research Analyst, Emerging Markets Equities at Ariel Investments, Jenna Shen, Managing Director, Goldman Sachs Vintage Funds, and Giannina Sy, a Principal at Neuberger Berman, on what to expect from markets and the alternative investment industry at large in the coming months and years ahead.

Moderator, Susan Webb is the Founder, CEO & CIO, Appomattox Advisory. Susan leads the investment team and sets the firms’ overall asset allocation including strategic implementation of its macro view. Susan overseas the investment and portfolio management professionals responsible for manager selection, asset allocation, proactive measures to manage portfolio risks and returns, and liquidity. Susan’s career in finance spans over 35 years, featuring hands-on derivatives trading, financing and structuring. Prior to founding Appomattox in 2005, Susan served as Managing Director of the fund of hedge funds Atlas Capital where she launched the seeding platform. She previously held senior positions on the trading desks of Citibank, Paribas Capital Markets and CIBC. She served as a managing director at Caisse des Depots, where she established the U.S. credit derivative and synthetic CLO and hedge fund structuring business.

Ms. Kalina Berova has over 20 years of investment and risk management experience. Currently, Ms. Berova is a Managing Director in the Partnership Portfolio of BCI. In her role, she is responsible for fund investments and co-investments across a broad range of private credit, structured credit and market neutral hedge fund strategies. With more than $200 billion in assets under management, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) invests on behalf of BC’s public sector. Previously, Kalina was a visiting researcher at Bodhi Research Group where she consulted institutional investors on best co-investment practices, alternative portfolio benchmarking, hedge fund diligence, etc. Prior to that, Kalina was a member of the External Relationships Team of OMERS, where she gained investment experience across various traditional and niche hedge fund strategies, custom alternative investment solutions, and private equity funds & co-investments. Ms. Berova began her career at the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan in the Asset Mix and Risk Group, where she developed expertise in portfolio construction and risk management of both alternative and traditional asset classes and investment strategies.

Christine Phillpotts serves as Portfolio Manager for Ariel’s emerging markets value strategy. Additionally, as a Senior Research Analyst, she researches consumer and real estate stocks across Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Eastern Europe. She also covers all sectors in Africa. Christine joined Ariel after 10 years at AllianceBernstein (AB) where she held the positions of portfolio manager and senior research analyst in emerging and frontier markets. She was part of the group that launched the Next 50 Emerging Markets Fund, AB’s inaugural frontier markets strategy. Before AB, Christine was the global portfolio manager for the Grassroots Business Fund, which spun out of the International Finance Corporation and invests in privately held emerging markets companies. There, she sourced, supervised and structured investments across Africa and helped establish the fund’s first international office in Nairobi, Kenya. As a member of the fund’s investment committee, Christine also evaluated transactions in Latin America and Asia. Previously, she worked at J.P. Morgan Asset Management as an equity research associate covering U.S. technology stocks. Christine serves on the board of directors of the Small Enterprise Assistance Funds, an impact-focused emerging market private equity fund. Formerly, she was on the board of the CFA Society New York. Christine is also a Robert Toigo Foundation Fellow and a CFA Charterholder. Fluent in French, she obtained her BA in economics with summa cum laude from Columbia University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Jenna Shen is a Managing Director of the Goldman Sachs Vintage Funds. With over $60 billion in committed capital since inception, the Vintage Funds have been innovators in the secondary market for over 20 years. Investing globally and across a range of asset classes, the Vintage Funds provide liquidity, capital and partnering solutions to private market investors and managers worldwide. Jenna joined Goldman Sachs in 2007 in the Investment Banking Division, focusing on the technology, media and communications sectors. She is a member of the Vintage Funds Investment Committee and XIG Private Co-Investment Strategies Investment Committee. Jenna also serves on the board of Grand Street Settlement, which provides community-based services to families in New York. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Jenna earned a BA, with honors, from Stanford University.

Giannina (Gia) Sy is a Principal at Neuberger Berman and a member of the Private Credit investment team. Prior to joining Private Credit in 2018, Ms. Sy was an Associate with Deutsche Bank’s Healthcare Investment Banking team. Ms. Sy graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Economics and minors in Mathematics and Computer Science.
