NYAIR Episode 45 – The Next Decade of Alternative Investments, From Adolescence to Responsible Citizenship

A conversation regarding the content of  the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) Association’s new Flagship Paper, “The Next Decade of Alternative Investments, From Adolescence to Responsible Citizenship.” Written by CAIA’s Curriculum and Content Team, the paper reviews the rise of alternative investments, the current state of these strategies and gives insight regarding expectations for the next decade.

John Bowman is a Senior Managing Director at CAIA, where he oversees the CAIA charter, thought leadership and content development, as well as CAIA’s Asia Pacific strategy. Prior to joining CAIA, Bowman served as Managing Director for the Americas for CFA Institute, a region comprised of 40+ countries from Canada, the U.S., Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Before that, he served as a portfolio manager at Mellon Growth Advisors (MGA), where he was responsible for portfolio construction and stock selection for the MGA International Growth and MGA Global Growth strategies. He also served as a portfolio manager for the International Growth Opportunities Strategy at State Street Global Advisors (SSgA) in its Global Fundamental Strategies Group. He is a frequent writer for industry and business publications such as the Wall Street Journal, and a commentator for organizations such as CNBC, among others.

William (Bill) Kelly is the CEO of the CAIA Association and is been a frequent industry speaker, writer, and commentator on alternative investment topics around the world. Prior to joining CAIA, Kelly was the CEO of Boston Partners and one of seven founding partners of its predecessor firm, Boston Partners Asset Management. His career in the institutional asset management space spans more than 30 years, during which time he has gained extensive managerial experience through successive CFO, COO and CEO roles. In addition to his role at CAIA, Kelly is a tireless advocate for shareholder protection and investor education and serves as the Chairman and lead independent director for the Boston Partners Trust Company. He has previously served as an independent director and audit committee chair for ’40 Act Mutual Funds and other financial services firms. He is also an Advisory Board Member of the Certified Investment Fund Director Institute. Kelly began his career as an accountant with PwC and is a designated Audit Committee Financial Expert in accordance with SEC rules.

Alessandra Tocco is a managing director and business strategist for Good Hill Partners. Prior to joining Good Hill Partners she was a managing director at J.P. Morgan, sitting on the prime brokerage management committee with specific responsibility for creating and overseeing the global Capital Advisory group encompassing business consulting, the content and branding efforts and capital introduction. Before that, she was a director of US capital introduction at ABN-AMRO focusing on macro and fixed income strategies. She began her career at Morgan Stanley, where she managed the due diligence effort and created several fund of fund products within the asset management division. In 2015 she was honored as one of the 50 Leading Women in Hedge Funds by The Hedge Fund Journal. In addition to her position as President of the New York Alternative Investment Roundtable, she is a member of the investment committee for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society and the youth development committee of the NYC chapter of the YMCA.
